In the Beginning
One hundred and fifty nine years ago, under the vision and determined leadership of a Dr. G.S Stevens, the church today known as Trinity United Methodist Church was officially organized. Although church history doesn’t record complete names, a dr. Grenville S. Stevens opened an office of homeopathic medicine in Providence in 1854 and it is reasonable to assume that this is the same gentlemen. At the meeting of the official Board of Mathewson Street Methodist Episcopal Church on December 17, 1858, Dr. Stevens proposed that a Methodist Mission be established in Lester Hall on Cranston Street.
